Finding My Dream Job Via Gumtree

The global economy has not been doing well lately and it seems like the impact of the 2008 recession is lasting much longer than expected. The worst consequence of the financial turmoil has been on the number of jobs being created, and with millions of young people leaving school and tertiary education every year the market gets increasingly saturated.

The Els Club is an award winning Gold course designed by non other than Ernie Els. Ernie Els has 70 professional career victories to his name, including four Major Championships, two World Golf Championships and seven World Matchplay titles.

Toward the end of last year I resigned from the Agency job I had in Johannesburg due to a number of reasons ,least of which been the insane commute from Pretoria to Johannesburg that consumed 3 hours of my day just sitting in traffic. But after a few months freelancing  I got the itch to go back to the 9 to 5 way of offering my skills. The first criteria for my new job was of course distance from Pretoria.

Anyone who has searched for a job will know that it takes a lot of time, patience and perseverance. Signing up to the various ‘jobseeker’ websites and having to complete tedious CV applications. After spending some time doing this I quickly realised that perhaps a more unique avenue needs to be explored. I’ve previously been involved in a few Gumtree campaign, most recently the Job Finder which once again showed me how useful Gumtree is.

I was expecting to find good results on Gumtree but was amazed when my first search result showed that there were just over 40 000 jobs being advertised. I’m a New Media and Marketing specialist and started filtering the results to find what I was looking for and post some information with keywords such as Jobs, Marketing and Online. A few days later I got an email asking for more information and a potential offer. We very quickly set up a coffee meeting and within a week I had met the MD of my new employee and secured the position.

Sue with Mom and Dad

Mom and Dad with me at The Els Club. It was a very emotional experience having my parents there because so many managers were saying such good things about my work and the fact that they see me as an Asset to the company. I guess in life all you want to do is make your parents proud. This picture shows the happiness on our faces. I remember dad saying: You are doing well and it’s only been 1 month. We are very proud … (and then my water works started)

Every day I do my rounds making sure that each entity from The Pro-shop, Golf school, The spa, Home Owners Association and Restaurant have all the Marketing colateral needed for the week ahead. I found this cutey at the Hair Studio. Couldn’t help but pick her up and cuddle her

Planning, Planning and more Planning. Yes, This is a day in the life of my 9-5. I love it xo

This story is a testament to how versatile the Gumtree platform is and I definitely suggest job seekers search the site for what they are looking for. If the ideal job is not being advertised, it’s a good idea to publish a post about yourself and the job you’re looking for.

These are my tips for searching for a job online:

  •  Know what you enjoy doing and the job you are looking for
  •  Research the market related salary and determine how far you’re prepared to travel
  •  Draft a professional concise CV
  • When being invited for an interview, ensure that it’s in a safe place (A company office where other staff are or a public place)

Another cool function on Gumtree is the Job Tips page

I hope this article was useful in some way or another, or if it just gave you hope. I’ll be happy with that too. This quote below has kept me going through alot of dark days.

I’m trusting my Creator each step of the way… “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” – Marie Curie

Ps. My gratitude goes out to the Management and staff of The Els Club, Copperleaf. Thank You forgiving me this platform to do what I love. You are all a blessing. Feels great to be apart of #TeamCopperleaf

Sincerely Sue (Marketing Manager of The  Els Club, Copperleaf and Copperleaf Country and Golf Estate)
